Remembering Spencer Milligan – The Star of Land of the Lost

Spencer Milligan, known for his role as Rick Marshall in the popular 1970s Saturday morning series Land of the Lost, passed away at the age of 86. Born in Oak Park, IL on September 10, 1937, Milligan began his career in local theater during the 1960s before serving in the Army. He then transitioned to screen acting with a small role in Woody Allen’s 1973 comedy film.

In 1974, Milligan was cast as Rick Marshall in the Sid & Marty Krofft brothers’ series Land of the Lost. The show followed Rick and his children as they navigated an alternate world filled with dinosaurs, aiming to find a way back home. Milligan starred in the first two seasons of the show before his character accidentally leaves the Land of the Lost without his kids. Despite its campy style, the series gained a cult following and even inspired a 1990s revival and a 2009 feature film.

Following his time on Land of the Lost, Milligan continued to work regularly in television throughout the 1980s. He made guest appearances on popular series such as Gunsmoke, Baretta, and The Bionic Woman. Additionally, he had a memorable seven-episode arc on General Hospital in 1987. Milligan also starred in TV movies like The Keegans and appeared in telepics in the early 1980s.

After his television career, Milligan shifted gears and began teaching classes and directing stage plays in Sturgeon Bay, WI. He remained active in the entertainment community and touched the lives of many aspiring actors and actresses. Milligan is survived by his wife, Kerry Milligan, and his godchildren, Andee Solis, Hilary Williams, and Spencer Williams.
