Barbara Butch was part of a scene titled “Festivity,” which aimed to celebrate sexual diversity and inclusion during the opening ceremony. The tableau, which also featured other drag performers and former Drag Race France contestants, was intended to embody the French spirit. However, the scene sparked controversy when some mistakenly associated it with Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, leading to accusations of insult to Christianity.
Artistic director Thomas Jolly clarified that the scene had no connection to The Last Supper but was inspired by Greek mythology. He explained that the presence of a figure representing the Greek god Dionysus in the tableau was a nod to celebration, as Dionysus is the god of wine and festivities in Greek mythology. Despite this clarification, public figures in and outside France, including church leaders, have criticized the scene and have yet to retract their statements.
Butch’s lawyer Audrey Msellati released a statement condemning the hateful messages directed at her client. Msellati highlighted Butch’s dedication to promoting values of benevolence, inclusivity, and love for others through her artistic projects. Butch intends to take legal action against both French nationals and foreigners responsible for the threats, emphasizing her commitment to standing up against intimidation.
The Magnin Museum in Dijon suggested that the tableau from the ceremony may have been inspired by The Feast of the Gods by Dutch painter Jan van Bijlert. Despite this reference, the scene’s true inspiration lies in Greek mythology and the celebration of diversity. The presence of Dionysus symbolizes joy and festivity, rather than any religious connotations associated with The Last Supper.
Several high-profile figures, including NFL player Harrison Butker, Republican politician Mike Johnson, and actress Candace Cameron Bure, initially criticized the scene for its alleged connection to The Last Supper. However, Jolly’s explanation regarding the tableau’s inspiration from Greek mythology has prompted a reevaluation of their initial reactions. The response from these figures underscores the complexity of interpreting artistic representations and the importance of understanding cultural references correctly.
