Celebrated Filmmaker Abel Ferrara Talks New Book and Upcoming Film Projects

Renowned filmmaker Abel Ferrara, known for his provocative and neo-noir style, is currently working on a new book titled “Scene.” In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Ferrara revealed that the book is not just a memoir but rather a collection of stories about the people he has encountered and the experiences he has had in the unpredictable world of show business.

Ferrara expressed his excitement about the upcoming release of “Scene,” which is scheduled to hit bookshelves in Italy and the U.S. around the middle of next year. While the details of the American publisher remain a mystery, Ferrara teased, “I can’t believe I actually got a book deal.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Ferrara has captivated audiences with films such as “The Driller Killer,” “King Of New York,” “Bad Lieutenant,” “The Funeral,” and a biopic on Pasolini. His upcoming project, “American Nails,” promises to be another gritty and thought-provoking addition to his filmography.

“American Nails,” set to star Willem Dafoe and Asia Argento, is described by Ferrara as a modernized take on the Greek mythology story of Phaedra. Argento is slated to portray the Phaedra character in the film, which is scheduled to begin shooting in September in the scenic town of Bari, Italy.

Ferrara’s innovative spirit extends beyond the realm of storytelling, as he discussed his approach to technology in filmmaking. During the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, Ferrara showcased his film “Padre Pio,” which features an Italian dub for its local release.

In a nod to the evolving landscape of cinema, Ferrara shared his use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the dubbing process, noting, “It looks like I directed in Italian, it’s very cool.” Embracing new technologies, Ferrara emphasized the importance of leveraging tools like AI to enhance the filmmaking experience.

As he approaches his 73rd birthday, Ferrara shows no signs of slowing down. Reflecting on the current state of the industry, he offered words of encouragement to emerging filmmakers, urging them to seize the opportunities presented by modern technology.

Encouraging young creatives to take charge of their own narratives, Ferrara highlighted the empowerment that platforms like YouTube and TikTok provide. He emphasized the freedom that comes with having the world at one’s fingertips, stressing the importance of autonomy and creativity in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Abel Ferrara’s unwavering dedication to his craft and his willingness to embrace innovation serve as an inspiration to filmmakers and storytellers alike. As he continues to push boundaries and defy expectations, Ferrara’s mantra remains clear: in the world of filmmaking, one must always be ready to face new challenges with courage and creativity.
