Critical Analysis of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” Segment

Colin Jost and Michael Che took aim at pop culture and current events during the “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday Night Live. Paramount+ was the subject of ridicule, with Jost highlighting a lawsuit involving the stars of Romeo and Juliet from 1968. The jab at Paramount Pictures locking away explicit images of the teenage stars on Paramount+ was a bit tasteless and lacked creativity.

The duo continued by mocking Donald Trump, with jokes about his recent victories and legal troubles. While the jokes were timely, they lacked originality and relied on tired stereotypes about the former president. Jost’s comparison of Trump’s speech to Bane from The Dark Knight Rises felt forced and unoriginal. Che’s jokes about Nikki Haley and Tim Scott kissing up to Trump were predictable and lacked depth.

Overall, the “Weekend Update” segment fell short in terms of originality and wit. The jokes were shallow and failed to provide any meaningful commentary on the current political landscape. Instead of offering insightful satire, the segment resorted to tired cliches and cheap shots at easy targets. The humor felt dated and lacked the sharpness that Saturday Night Live is known for.

Colin Jost and Michael Che’s performance on the “Weekend Update” segment of Saturday Night Live left much to be desired. The jokes about Paramount+, Trump, and other political figures felt stale and uninspired. The lack of originality and depth in the humor detracted from the overall impact of the segment. Moving forward, the writers and performers of Saturday Night Live should strive to deliver more incisive and relevant comedy in their satire of current events.
