Danish Director Thomas Vinterberg Premieres New Series at Venice Film Festival

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg is set to premiere his latest seven-part series, Families Like Ours, at the prestigious Venice Film Festival this weekend. The drama, which marks Vinterberg’s first foray into television since his Oscar-winning film Another Round, is one of four high-end series that will be showcased at the festival.

Families Like Ours takes inspiration from Denmark’s vulnerability to rising sea levels due to climate change. In the series, the Danish government initiates a plan to evacuate the entire population as water levels continue to rise. The story follows a high-school student, played by Amaryllis August, who is faced with the difficult decision of choosing between her divorced parents and the boy she loves as the nation prepares to abandon their homes and communities.

The series boasts a talented ensemble cast including Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Paprika Steen, Helene Reingaard Neumann, Magnus Millang, Esben Smed, David Dencik, Thomas Bo Larsen, and Asta Kamma August. Families Like Ours is a seven-episode series produced under the Creation Orignale Canal+ label, with Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing at Zentropa Entertainment leading the production in collaboration with Studiocanal, Canal+, TV2 Denmark Ard Degeto, and TV4. Studiocanal is responsible for handling international sales.

The series will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before heading to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Families Like Ours will be featured in a special focus at Venice alongside other highly anticipated series including Alfonso Cuarón’s Disclaimer, Joe Wright’s M. Son Of The Century, and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The New Years.

With an intriguing premise, a talented cast, and the visionary direction of Thomas Vinterberg, Families Like Ours is poised to make a significant impact on the television landscape. As audiences around the world eagerly anticipate its release, the series promises to deliver a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant exploration of the impact of climate change on society.
