Founded by inDrive, a technology company committed to diverse social causes, the project serves as a platform for filmmakers to present their narratives while striving to make a meaningful impact on local communities and worldwide. With the upcoming Alternativa Film Awards scheduled for November 29 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, excitement is palpable as the project unveils a remarkable lineup of shortlisted films and a distinguished jury.
This year has seen an impressive surge in participation, with a staggering 670 submissions, double that of the previous year held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. From this vast pool, 25 films were selected, showcasing a rich mosaic of storytelling. This year’s entries span 14 Asian countries and are presented in 20 languages, highlighting the initiative’s commitment to diversity. Among the submissions, female-directed films represent nearly half of the entire selection, marking a significant step toward inclusivity in the film industry. Moreover, a substantial number of feature-length entries—nine, to be exact—are debut works, spotlighting emerging talent ready to make their mark.
The jury for this year’s awards is an eclectic mix of esteemed creators, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the table. Notable jury members include Anand Gandhi from India, known for his thought-provoking narratives; Kamila Andini, a celebrated Indonesian director; and Steffi Niederzoll, a German filmmaker recognized for her impactful storytelling. The jury also includes prominent figures like Iranian filmmaker Amir Masoud Soheili and Brazilian activist and filmmaker Carol Misorelli, ensuring that a variety of viewpoints will shape the awards’ outcomes.
In tandem with the awards ceremony, the Alternativa Film Festival is set to take place from November 22-28. This festival will serve as a venue for public screenings of the shortlisted films, along with engaging discussions that delve deeper into the topics presented. Furthermore, a newly introduced three-day Industry Days program aims to enhance collaboration among filmmakers, producers, and social impact leaders from Southeast Asia, creating an ecosystem of mutual support and inspiration.
With an impressive total prize pool of $100,000 allocated for winners in various categories, this initiative not only acknowledges artistic contributions but also provides vital funding to support future projects. Four films within the feature-length category will each receive $20,000, while the shorts category will award $10,000 to each of the two winners.
