The Closure of Regency’s Westwood Village and Bruin Theaters: A Historic End

Regency’s historic Westwood Village and Bruin theaters are sadly closing this week as their leases come to an end. With the last day of operation being July 25th, these iconic theaters have served the Hollywood community and patrons alike for the past 14 years.

The Westwood Fox Village, known for its 170-foot Spanish Revival Art Deco tower, is expected to undergo a renovation after the filmmaker initiative led by Jason Reitman earlier this year saved the 1931 cinema. The fate of Bruin Theater, which opened in 1937 and counts 670 seats, is currently up in the air.

Both Westwood Fox Village and the Bruin theaters have been destinations for major Hollywood premieres, hosting blockbuster films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and It: Chapter Two. The Fox Village even boasts a 70MM projector, making it a popular venue for filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson.

The Westwood Fox Village will be closing its curtains on Apple’s Fly Me to the Moon, while the Bruin Theater will wrap up with the big blockbuster Twisters, which has overperformed to $81.2 million nationwide. Regency Theatres have operated these venues for the past 14 years, but now it’s time for a new chapter in the history of these beloved Los Angeles landmarks.

Looking Towards the Future

As the Westwood Village and Bruin theaters prepare to close their doors, the Hollywood community is left wondering about the future of these iconic landmarks. While it is uncertain what lies ahead for these theaters, one thing is for sure: they will always hold a special place in the hearts of moviegoers and cinema enthusiasts alike.
