The Impact of International Box Office on Hollywood Films

The recent success of Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie in international markets has been quite impressive. The film managed to secure the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on both domestic and global charts. With a strong offshore session in 60 markets, the film raked in $27.1M, bringing its worldwide total to an impressive $152.2M. What stood out was the fact that overseas markets only saw a slight 3% decrease from the previous weekend, indicating a consistent and steady performance.

In China, Alcon’s partnership with Stars Collective to distribute the film through China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures paid off, as the film opened to $8.2M within just two days. The film also saw success in other new markets such as Poland, Australia, and Indonesia. Poland brought in $2.4M, which was a 45% increase from “The Secret Life of Pets 2.” Australia debuted to $2M and Indonesia saw an opening of $700K, surpassing “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.”

Germany also contributed significantly to the film’s success, climbing 131% in its fourth weekend and securing the top slot in the local market with a total of $7.6M. The UK followed closely, experiencing just a 5% drop in its second weekend, reaching a cume of $8.1M. With Mexico hitting $19M, Malaysia jumping 21% in its second weekend, and many other markets still to come, the future looks promising for The Garfield Movie.

While The Garfield Movie basked in success, Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga faced a more muted response following its debut. The film managed to bring in $21M in 77 markets, with a 38% drop from holdovers. This film’s overseas total now stands at $64.7M, with a global total of $114.4M. However, there were some strong holds in key markets like Germany, Belgium, and France, indicating pockets of success amidst the challenges faced.

20th Century/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues to show its playability in international markets. With just a 28% drop from the previous weekend, the film added $15.2M in 52 markets, bringing its international cume to $197.1M. The film has garnered significant success in various countries, making it the best installment of the franchise in places like India, Colombia, and Turkey.

Paramount’s IF also continued its successful run in overseas markets, adding another $11M in 69 markets. The film’s worldwide box office total now stands at $138M after its third weekend, with an offshore total of $57.6M. What’s remarkable is the fact that overseas plays only dipped by 8%, indicating a consistent and stable performance.

The international box office continues to play a significant role in the success of Hollywood films. The performance of films like The Garfield Movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and IF highlight the importance of overseas markets in the global film industry. As the industry continues to evolve, it’s clear that tapping into international audiences is crucial for the success of any film.
